Khamrah: the original
Khamrah means wine in Arabic, and the fragrance smells like a spiced dessert wine. Cinnamon and nutmeg on top, sticky dates and praline in the heart, then vanilla, tonka and benzoin for hours. It is loud, warm and impossible to miss, which is exactly why it became one of the most talked-about fragrances in the world. Fans of Kilian Angels’ Share will recognise the mood immediately.
Wear it from October to March, in the evening, with two sprays at most. In Karachi summer it becomes syrup. It is the best gift of the three because everybody knows it.
Khamrah Qahwa: the coffee one
Qahwa is Arabic coffee, and this flanker swaps the dates for freshly ground beans and crushed cardamom, with ginger and cinnamon on top and a vanilla praline base. It is noticeably less sweet than the original and reads darker and more grown-up. Coffee lovers usually prefer it on the first spray.
Slightly more wearable in warm weather than the original, and the one we suggest to men who found Khamrah too sugary.
Khamrah Dukhan: the smoky one
Dukhan means smoke. This is Khamrah after dark: frankincense, tobacco leaf and a smoked, resinous vanilla. The sweetness is still there but it sits behind incense, so it feels closer to niche amber fragrances than to a gourmand. It is the most polarising of the three and, for people who love it, the best.
Strictly a cold-weather, evening fragrance. One spray is enough for a full night out.
Which one should you buy?
- First Khamrah, or a gift: the original.
- You like coffee, or dislike very sweet perfume: Qahwa.
- You want intensity and incense for winter nights: Dukhan.
- You already own the original and want a second: Qahwa for variety, Dukhan for depth.
